Stay Alive (2006)
USA (dir. William Brent Bell)
Cast: Jon Foster, Samaire Armstrong, Frankie Muniz, Sophia Bush, Adam Goldberg, Alice Krige, Milo Ventimiglia, Jimmi Simpson
Synopsis: After the mysterious, brutal death of an old friend, a group of teenagers find themselves in possession of “Stay Alive,” an ultra-realistic 3-D videogame based on the spine-chilling true story of a 17th century noblewoman, known as “The Blood Countess.” The gamers don’t know anything about the game other than they’re not supposed to have it… and they’re dying to play it. Not able to resist temptation, the kids begin to play the grisly game but soon make a chilling connection — they are each being murdered one-by-one in the same way as the characters they played in the game. As the line between the game world and the real world disappears, the teens must find a way to defeat the vicious and merciless Blood Countess, all the while trying to… stay alive.
You know horror movie screenwriters are running out of ideas when they write a script involving Countess Bathory, 5 or 6 young hot people in their late teens early twenties, and a video game that kills people (for real). Yeah, you read that last part correctly, the video game kills people in real life if they die in the game. Oh and we also figure out half-way through the movie that the video game kills people who pause the video game. Oh and then we find out that the video game also kills the creator of the game after he leaks a bootleg copy of it (illegal file-sharing is wrong kids!). Oh and we also figure out that the video game kills you if you win the game. So essentially, you are screwed from the second you pop the game into your PlayStation. You are also screwed if you decide to watch this movie for an actual plot. Oh and by the way, Frankie Muniz is in this movie. And they don’t even kill him onscreen. They just show him falling into a rose bush and just let you assume he died a horrible death. How satisfying would it have been to see him getting ripped in half? Or with his head cut off? The movie would have garnered a whole extra half star from me if they ruined that little shit.
